In a separate but related announcement, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services confirmed that a rare case of primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM)—a deadly brain infection caused by the ameba Naegleria fowleri—was recently identified in another Missouri resident. The patient, who is unrelated to Carson’s accident, is currently being treated in intensive care.

While the source of exposure has not yet been confirmed, preliminary investigations suggest the infection may have been linked to recreational water activities at the Lake of the Ozarks, around the same timeframe. Health officials are reminding the public that although Naegleria fowleri exists naturally in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and ponds, infections are extremely rare.

Between 1962 and 2024, only 167 cases of PAM have been reported in the United States. Missouri has recorded just two other cases—in 1987 and 2022. Importantly, this infection is not contagious and cannot be contracted by swallowing water. Instead, it occurs when contaminated water enters the nose and allows the ameba to travel to the brain, where it causes severe and often fatal damage.

Officials are urging recreational water users to remain cautious but not fearful, stressing that the risk of infection remains very low despite the organism’s presence in warm freshwater.
